Usda Certified Organic Dog Foods

Unquestionably, USDA certified organic pet foods are healthier than pet foods made from conventionally produced ingredients.  Unlike cheaper conventional pet foods, USDA certified organic pet foods contain no residues from pesticides, fungicides, herbicides, or chemicals accumulated during manufacturing that may include a number of the toxic chemicals that are associated with conventional pet food processing.  Organic pet foods contain more nutrients–such as vitamins, antioxidants, and minerals–than non-organic pet food.  This is especially important, considering the depletion of nutrients that comes with heavy processing and the consequent need to supplement pet foods with mostly synthetic, low-grade nutrients in order to provide some level of nutrition to dogs, cats, or other pets.  So, USDA certified organic pet foods are a great way to provide your animal friend with safe, nutrient-rich food staples.  But beware: currently in the USA, only organic certification is regulated by law and any claim of organic status other than that of ‘(USDA) certified organic’ is not substantiated by an unbiased third party.

Organic dog foods are great if done right.  The best organic dog food is, of course, prepared fresh at home.  However, this may be challenging, given the time constraints of the modern world.  Although USDA certified organic dog foods are a great choice, there are big differences in quality among the many available choices.  Most of these differences stem from the quality of the ingredients used.  Although no low-grade ingredients, such as byproducts or other indefinable ingredients, can be included in USDA certified organic dog foods, a number of important nutritional distinctions arise from manufacturers’ choices of ingredients.  Some of these distinctions are highlighted below.

Organic dog food should not contain grains or flours as first, or primary, ingredients.  Dogs did not evolve to eat grains, whether raw or cooked.  Although cooking will render grains digestible by the dog’s gastrointestinal tract, cooking also destroys many constituent nutrients; often, the only thing left are empty calories with little or no substantive nutritional value.

The first ingredient in organic dog food should always be a clearly defined source of animal protein.  Don’t choose dog foods that contain ingredients listed as ‘chicken meals’ or ‘animal protein,’ as these cannot be reliably traced to their origin. Absent any known origin, it’s easy for manufacturers to use low quality sources of animal protein.  Moreover–and tragically, as recent history has taught us–if any contamination or tainting of unsourcable ingredients occurs, it becomes difficult to mount a quick and effective pet food recall to save animal lives if one can’t trace the ingredient in question to its source.  In the case of USDA certified organic dog foods, one needn’t worry because the USDA organic standards prohibit the use of obscure and unsourceable low quality ingredients.

Any choice of organic dog food should contain some fruits and/or vegetables.  However, plant matter should never make up more than 50% of the total contents of a given dog food product.  The percentage of plant matter in a given dog food should be more in the range of 30-40% of the contents by weight.  And it goes without saying that these ingredients should be organic as well, both to avoid contamination with toxins and increase the nutritional value and health benefits of any given USDA certified organic dog food.

The great thing about feeding your animal with whole food-based USDA certified organic products is that you shouldn’t have to worry about routinely supplementing whole foods with isolated nutrients because organic foods are generally much more nutrient-dense than conventional–or non-organic–pet foods.  In the case of a truly organic diet, you can supplement with nutrients simply on the basis of your own animal’s particular individual needs, and only when necessary.  Such occasional supplementation makes it possible for you to choose high-quality supplements for your dog instead of the typically low-grade vitamin-and-mineral mixes added by conventional pet food manufacturers to enable them legally to call their foods ‘balanced’ or ‘complete.’

Although choosing USDA certified organic pet foods over conventional varieties is just a first step toward better health and wellbeing for your animal, it’s a very important first step. So, be good to your animal; take that first step today!

What is An All Natural Dog Food?

What’s on your mind when you consider an all natural dog food? Could it be a commercial dog food which has the word ‘natural’ on the packet? Could it be you think of cooking your own dog food from scratch? Do you consider table scraps to be the ideal diet?Wrong! None of the above will address your dog’s health, Why not?Well, the commercial dog food starts off with very low grade meat, mostly meat by-products (the better quality going for the higher priced human food), high fat and sometimes euthanased animals, which contain the chemical sodium pentobarbital. Then, to bulk out the already cheap ‘meat’, a non-nutritional filler is added. That can be sugar, as there’s a world glut of it at the moment, or melamine if you live in China.Then, to keep the product indefinitely at room temperature a preservative is added.When you see a packet of dried dog food in the shop, with the slogan ‘preservative free’ ask yourself this question – how can dried ‘meat’ be kept indefinitely at room temperature without preservatives? Do you think you wouldn’t have heard of a new way to do this, if there was?So either there is no ‘meat’ or there is preservative present. Trouble is, the preservatives used are very strong, cause huge health problems and aren’t allowed in human food.So commercial dog food can be crossed off as an all natural dog food!.I see quite a lot of ‘dog experts’ on the internet advocating you cook your own dog food. TraceGains? Spells out Sensible Food Supply Chain Solutions

The mission at TraceGains (www.TraceGains.com) is to protect the brand of food and beverage clients by eliminating problems before product is shipped to the customer.

Recently Georgia legislators, and other states are slated to follow, are taking reactionary and draconian legislative measures. After Georgia-made peanut products were named as the culprit in a nationwide salmonella outbreak, state lawmakers have moved quickly on a bill to make Georgia the first state to require food makers to swiftly alert state inspectors if their internal tests show their products are tainted.  The proposed food safety regulations would require the food processors to report the results within 24 hours.  Never mind false positives, bad testing data, damaged brand protection from erroneous media reporting, and other nefarious outcomes.  Federal officials, food scientists, legal experts and industry groups cannot point to another state with similar requirements and will cause many food manufacturers to vacate the state, causing significant job losses at a time when such a results can least be afforded.

 

 

The most sensible approach has three steps:

 

(a)       a unique identification number for each shipper

(b)       identification of the owner

(c)        product number identifying the contents of the carton

(d)       production lot number or other production identifier

 

Initially, the labeling can be at the individual case or master case level (whichever is most appropriate), but labeling quickly should move in the next five years to individual items inside the case as appropriate.  We don’t think each apple, for example, should have this information, but if the carton contains wrapped, tinned or otherwise packaged food products, each separately wrapped consumer-ready food item should be labeled.   The label containing the above bar-coded information should also be human readable and interoperable throughout the supply chain:  from growers and first-mile producers all the way to the receiving dock of the retailer who provides the finished product to the consumer.  Retailers, though, would not be required to tie a specific sale to a specific consumer. 

 

One such labeling approach would be to combine the current UPC code with the lot number using the Global Standard 1 (GS1-128) labeling standard.  There are several labeling standards, though, and we are not predisposed to a specific standard.

Food Storage

My mother does not know how to make adjustments; especially when it comes to food. She had eight kids and is accustomed to food shopping for 10, which includes her and my dad. But everyone has flown the coupe, and still she food shops for eight hungry hippos as if no one has ever left. Her food storage cabinets contain more cans than a grocery store shelf. The refrigerator is ready to feed the entire state of Rhode Island. She could set up some tables at the Rhode Island welcome center and people could help themselves and take home some leftovers.

Do you know anyone like this, who over food shops and needs more food storage? Well this is not just a domestic issue. Many food venders lack the food storage space in their own homes, or they refuse to use their own homes for food storage. Food venders seek relief in storage units for food storage. If a storage unit is granted, food venders are limited to package and canned goods for using storage units as food storage. Freezer and refrigerator food usually is prohibited.

Someone might be storing food for charity reasons. A social worker might be collecting food donations to help feed the hungry. In this case, storage units serve as temporary food storage until the food is shipped to its destination.

If you are planning on using a storage unit for food storage, take some precautions to insure that your storage unit doesn’t become infested with bugs and rats. Put bagged food items in sealed storage bins. This will prevent bugs and rats from smelling food in your storage unit. Storage bins also keep them from penetrating the bags of food. Store all the food goods off the ground. Use a shelf or table to elevate the food from the floor. Double bag and seal airtight all food items. Check the food for broken or damaged packaging. If packaging is broken get rid of the food by throwing it away or eating it. Leaving it in food storage is an invitation for mice and rats. Taking these precautions could save you and your storage neighbors from infestation. Your storage neighbor is already nervous about renting a storage unit next to food storage, so don’t give him any grief.

Food storage is best when kept in a climate control unit. Climate control will insure that your food items be kept at a constant 70 degrees. Your stored food won’t spoil from extreme temperature conditions. Preserved food doesn’t last forever; however, you don’t have to shorten foods live by letting it cook in 100 degree weather. Can drinks and bottle drinks are ultra sensitive to temperature variations. A can of seasoned can of soda will become stale from climate change. So, to insure the best quality from your product, keep food in a climate control unit.

Storing food in a storage unit can be a pleasurable experience if it is done right. Otherwise you may cause a nightmare for yourself and your storage unit neighbors.

Negative Calorie Foods – Three Characterstics of All Negative Calorie Food

There has been a lot of back and forth in online communities on whether negative calorie foods exist, or if it’s all a bunch of hooey. One thing I’ve noticed while doing extensive research is that often times the people who are most adamant that “negative calorie foods” is a stupid concept seem to miss what the actual negative foods concept is about.
Negative calories foods are not foods that don’t have calories. All food has calories of some kind unless it’s water. Negative calorie foods are foods belonging to a diet that empahsizes foods that are low in calories, but which the body takes more energy to burn than it receives. The theory is that the normal calorie burn from digesting the food and living a normal life will wipe out the calories eaten from these foods.
For example, if a slice of carrot had 10 calories, but took 12 to burn, that food would have -2 calorie effect on your body. That doesn’t mean the carrots are -2 calories, but that the end result of this process is to lose weight. The idea with negative calorie foods, which are always certain types of fruits and veggies and are usually very high in fiber, and have a low number of calories to begin with.
I repeat this because it’s important: no foods have negative calories. The lowest you can possibly get is zero, which is water. But ice water requires the body to work to warm it up for use, meaning that although the calorie amounts burned are paltry (an estimated 50 calories for the recommended 8 glasses of ice water a day), that still creates a negative calorie effect since your body burned 50 calories to process ice water, which gave back 0 calories.
This is what is meant by “negative calorie foods.” A more accurate description might be “Foods low in calories that produce a negative calorie effect because of how much energy it takes to burn them,” but that doesn’t sound very catchy. Meanwhile the term “negative calorie foods” gets the same idea across.
So as for the argument over whether these technically exist or not, negative calorie foods do what they are supposed to for a negative calorie foods diet: they make you lose weight. That’s the entire point, isn’t it?
The idea of negative calorie foods works for several reasons, and most of these foods have a few things in common that make this possible:
1) All of these foods are extremely high in fiber. This makes it much easier for your body to digest quickly, and use every nutrient while passing the rest straight on through quickly enough that it can’t stick around to become fat.
2) All of these foods are either fruits or veggies. These food groups are commonly the healthiest types of food for you anyway, and almost never have any fat, though there are exceptions (like coconuts, which definitely do NOT make the negative foods list).
3) Most all of these foods will have a high water content. This makes sense since no matter how strong a metabolic effect a food has, the higher in calories it is the harder it will be to burn all of them off.
Those are the three main characteristics of the so called “negative calorie foods.”
